Huddersfield is a historic market town in West Yorkshire, Northern England, nestled in the Pennine foothills. Huddersfield sits in a scenic valley, making it a great base for exploring Yorkshire’s countryside while still having strong transport links to major cities.
Located among the beautiful rolling hills of West Yorkshire, close to where the rivers Colne and Holme meet, is the town of Huddersfield. Home to over 100,000 residents, Huddersfield is very much in the mould of many Yorkshire towns, with narrow streets and red-brick terraces.
Until recently Huddersfield was generally known as a market town but, since its Polytechnic college was upgraded to university status, certain local figures have suggested it should be seen as primarily a university town.
With a history dating back to the Roman era, obviously there are a number of ancient buildings of note in Huddersfield, the most dramatic of which has to be the town’s railway station. With its stately colonnades and its spectacular classic Corinthian frontage, the station building overlooks the town’s main square and is held with a certain amount of affection among locals.
One of the oldest race meets in the country, Chester races is held on the Roodee in Chester. A great day out and the opportunity to mix with some of the elite of Chester and spot the odd famous face or two!
